2017 NINGALOO WHALESHARK FESTIVAL 2017
Friday May 26 - Sunday May 28
The annual Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival, in and around Exmouth WA, will be held from Friday May 26 to Sunday May 28. The festival highlights the community’s relationship with the annual return of the whale shark. The festival activities begin with a Gala Festival Opening at Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort. Dress up in your finest and enjoy exquisite food and drink as well as top entertainment (ticketed event). One of Australia’s best didgeridoo players, Mark Atkins will perform by the pool followed by the Perth Symphony Orchestra String Quartet. Grace Barbé will return to Exmouth bringing colourful and energetic fusion of tropical island rhythms with African percussion, reggae, pop, rock and Latin flavours. The three day celebration is for all ages and will include live entertainment, magic, circus acts, aerial displays, a fancy dress fun run, market and food stalls, beach games and activities. Saturday is Festival Day at Talanjee Oval. Monsterball slides and the ninja challenge will be huge hits with families. Youth Action Exmouth will introduce slacklining, walking or balancing between two anchor points – like tight rope walking. Kaleido, a new circus act to Exmouth, will include aerial displays and harpist Catherine Ashley. Swedish performer, Johan Wellton, will show a mixture of high voltage circus skills and witty comedy. The Saturday entertainment continues once the sun goes down with live music at Cadillacs Bar & Grill where the festival’s headline musical act, Southern River Band will be lighting up the stage with their unique style of garage rock. Datura 4 will excite with their psychedelic blues (ticketed 18+ event). The festival continues on Sunday with a Big Day Out at Ningaloo Reef to meet the stars of the show, the whale sharks. It will wind up with a fun-filled family afternoon of activities and live entertainment at the Exmouth Yacht Club on Town Beach (tickets available at the event).
Background: NINGALOO WHALESHARK FESTIVAL
The Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival is a community event. Ningaloo Reef is a name recognised nationally and internationally as a ‘premier marine environment’, home to the most predictable, seasonal aggregations of whale sharks in the world. The Ningaloo Whaleshark Festival highlights the community’s relationship with the annual visit of the whale shark. The objective is to bring together government departments, business, industry and community members to strengthen their relationships, while enhancing the education and celebration of the whale shark. The aim of the festival is to share and learn from each other’s experiences, present new advances in technology, ideas and research, and most importantly, to communicate these urgent issues through networking with one another.
